THE WATCHERS REVIVE

By the time he got to the village, he was out of breath for he had been running. An old woman came out to meet him and the shock on her face when she saw what he carried almost made her faint. “The baby...help my child” was all he could say before his eyes fell shut. The watchers had never seen such bravery and wisdom in all the inhabitants of the earth and they made sure that Jorgan lived another day. Jorgan knew that he ought to have been dead for in his tussle between life and death, light and darkness he heard voices, like men in a bargain. The price for his life he heard had been paid and death had no hold over him. He heard voices but saw nothing for his eyes were dark as darkness could be.  He tried to speak but his voice was not in his throat; he searched for himself but he could lay no hold on his body. He felt not his feet nor his arms, his hair nor his clothes and then the voices ceased. All he heard was silence pure and unhindered. There was no stair in the silence ...

THE WATCHERS SEE

He had no experience with delivering a new born but he managed to bring out the child. She was as beautiful as her mother but something was wrong, the child didn’t cry like all babies do. He thought that she was dead too but her tiny heart was beating though slowly. The cold was severe and he was sure that she would die if he didn’t find a way to keep her warm. He had no milk and he was sure that she needed food. He looked up and saw the village and wondered how he would get the baby there with life still in her. Then somehow, his eyes rested on his wife’s body and a wild thought took hold of him. “She will not die inside you Marynth but she must live inside you” he told his dead wife. He wrapped the baby up in all the clean clothes he had, sacrificing his as well. He made sure he wife bled out and he took some of the bloodied clothes and placed them inside his wife’s body till he was sure no blood could touch the clothes on top, and then he pl...

THE WATCHERS AMAZED

He needed to get her to safety and the next village was five moons away. The night had come and all he had asides his dying wife were the rags left by the villagers who left. He tried to carry her but it was too painful for her. He gathered the rags around her and wept till he had no more tears in him. “Remove this child from me” she said almost breathless. He shifted at the sound of her voice and was perplexed at what she said. “I have no strength in me to push it out and I will not have her die inside me, so get her out!” he was more than startled. He didn’t want to do what she was suggesting, so he tried to carry her to the next village. He gave her all the food and water they had and she was still alive three moons later. They were almost at the village and he urged her to stay alive. On the fourth moon, when the village was in sight, he felt life leave her. He had never known such a feeling in all his years but now he felt it. She was in his arm...

THE WATCHERS

They were now in the month of Marynth’s delivery and the cold hadn’t ceased so Jorgan made a hard decision. He knew that if they both stayed on the land, they would die but they had a chance to live if they returned to their village. One day when the cold was less, he took Marynth and what little properties they had and set out for their village. It was an arduous journey and Marynth was very much in pain. She was the quiet one of their union and the knowledge of her pains had not gotten to her husband yet.   Since they had no livestock, these two had to walk to their village and Marynth was growing weaker. It had taken them two moons to leave their village and settle on their land but now with the ice building mountains and covering whole trees, it had taken them eight moons. When they got to their village all that Jorgan could do was to kick piles of snow and say the worse things. Little did he know that Marynth was shaking and it was no sooner than that that she let...

THE WATCHERS WATCH

Jorgan was to marry Marynth on the seventh cold moon of the cold month. All the festivities were set and the families had made the agreements regarding the marriage, now everyone waited for the day to arrive. Jorgan was really excited about his wife-to-be and couldn’t wait for the day to arrive so one day, he and Marynth disappeared. Both their families were worried about them for they had been gone for a moon but their worries were stayed when the duo returned in the morning. Nobody scolded them about their actions for they were reckoned to have known what they were doing being adults. All that they got as discipline was the suspicious looks of the elders. “You know that you could have waited Jorgan, your marriage is only a few moons away and she would have been all yours. Now everyone in the village knows about what you both did.” Heptac, Jorgan’s best friend spoke to him like a brother indeed. Jorgan did not regret his actions until he realised that everyone had heard a...

THE WATCHERS

In Jorgans’s time, there were some important components of life: the earth, its inhabitants and the watchers who are also known as the heavens. The earth was where its inhabitants stayed, farmed, procreated and died but the watchers never die. They, like their name suggests watch the earth and all that are done therein. No one on earth ever knew why they were watching or what they watched with but it was very true that they indeed watched. This story is told by a watcher who had lived for years that no life form on earth had ever lived and only the pure in heart can understand.
