THE GROWING YEARS: OVERCONFIDENCE

Image
Jake had gone to a new school to start JSS 3. In his previous school, he was permanently coming second in class. His only opposition to the first position was a girl called Mary. She was very studious and would take down points when the teacher explained a note. Jake was a bright student but lacked the interest in reading. He would return home from school, go to the field on a non-church day, stay up late watching movies and never read his notes . His only help was that he listened keenly to his teachers in class. So during exams or tests, he would write what he understood during the teacher's explanation. His teachers usually liked that about him, the fact that he doesn't give what is in his note. So in this new school, Jake thought that it would be business as usual. His ego was fanned by two of his classmates from his former school who also moved and were his classmates in his new school. They had helped him announce to the class that he usually came 2nd in their previo...

SOMETHING SINISTER 2

Image
Mark, on the other hand wasn't too pleased with the way his boss posted him around. He felt used and under-appreciated; they sent him on errands to places they would send no one else to. It was unfair to him and he could see that Jane was losing the glimmer in her eyes. He recalled the first day he saw her; she was at the butcher's section in the market. She looked like she knew her way around the place so well that most of the sellers seemed to like her. She had an aura about herself,  was it the way she walked? Or the way she laughed? He couldn't tell,  but he knew she had won his heart. It was on that day that he noticed something in her eyes,  it was like a spark,  a twinkling,  a glimmering twinkle and it was so beautiful. She looked like a happy baby that only needed to smile and ships would set sail but now,  that twinkle was gone and it frightened him. He had resolved to quit his job if the news of another posting hit him and so far,  there ...

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

Image
A young jockey felt he was no good. He had fallen off his horse on his first attempt of riding in public. He was so disappointed because he had put so much into training for that day. His horse was strong and ready, his saddle was fixed and the tracks were all good. What then happened to him? Why did he fall? He felt he was not meant to be a jockey after all. He decided to quit. "Yes, I will quit and go back to being a stableman" he said to himself. Few weeks later, an older man came to get a new horse for his own jockey and he met our young jockey friend. They got talking and the man discovered that this stableman knew so much about horse racing. "Why aren't you a jockey?" he asked. The young man narrated what had happened to him. The older man then said this to him: Just because you failed once doesn't make you a failure . You only fail when you refuse to get back up and try again . Have you tried riding again after that inci...

SOMETHING SINISTER

Image
It had been a really hectic year for Jane and Mark. They had had to move a couple of times from one state to another. Nigeria isn't and had never been an easy country to live In and since Mark got posted to the country,  it had been one trip to another. It hadn't been easy and though Mark was unaware,  Jane was getting fed up. She often felt guilty feeling this way,  she knew it was her place to love and support him and to make some sacrifices but she was unsure as to where the dividing line should be between her dreams and his goals. They were now in Edo state and she could only pray that there would be some stability this time around. She was tired and any mention of another trip or an idea of moving again was going to break her heart and something else more delicate.

GINGER

Image
How's the taste of the rhizome ginger in your mouth? Take a minute to think about it. Is it harsh,  peppery or kicky? Does it leave you with any room to just breath and take it easy? I don't think it does. I think it mainly sets you on the edge, slaps you back and forth, opens up your eyes (might make some teary) and until it's gone,  it's not gone. One thing about it is that,  you can hardly forget that you chewed on it. Some people are just like ginger. They come into your life and put you on the edge so that you are aware that they are with you. They help bring out the best in you; open your eyes and kick you to be your best. Like ginger,  they are really good for you; they ginger you.  What kind of friend,  co-worker, brother,  sister, spouse,  parent are you? Do you ginger those around you to be their best or do you offend them instead?  Take a minute or two to think about it.
