Oskar: Welcome back my wife. How did your day go? Wife: It went well. We have been paid our salaries; take this money for yourself and the house. Oskar: Oh thank you. But eh... it is not enough my wife. The house is in need of a lot of things especially the kitchen and I would also like to get some new personal things for myself. Wife: Do you think I work in a factory where money is made? What do you know about working? You have never even seen the four walls of an office. My friend take that money and use it wisely, I will add nothing to it. And I suggest you forget your personals and cater to this house and i don't know why this sitting room is looking like this, make sure you sweep it now. Oskar: But i... Wife: My word is final! This is my house, I pay the bills and you contribute nothing so stop telling me how to spend my money and don’t forget that I MARRIED YOU! Bring my food, I’m hungry. And hope it is not the same soup you gave me yesterday? I’m tired...

THE OTHER WAY ROUND (2)

Somewhere far away from Sasha and Tom was a little family of Tito and Yasmin. Their only son, Oskar was to get married in a few weeks and preparations were at its peak. Yasmin being the mother of Oskar and according to culture had to give her son out in marriage; she was busied up to her neck in getting him ready for the august occasion. As she sat to ponder on the setting of the traditional marriage which was to be held in her home she couldn’t help but be thankful that she had only one son. “After all, these days, culture and society at large favour the female children” she thought to herself. Later that night, she called her son to sit with her and get some advice. She advised him on all she could think of; from home care to wife care and how to respect and treat his wife to-be. It was culture for him to listen and ask as little questions as possible. The marriage ceremony was done swiftly on the twenty-third rising of the sun for the month and all the ceremonial act...

THE OTHER WAY ROUND(1)Cont'd

Sasha: Why didn't you tell me about its gender? Why did you wait till the nurses brought it here? You have always been incompetent! You can't do anything right! What are we supposed to do with another boy? Tom: What do you want from me? I have tried to give you a girl but its not working! What do you want from me? Sasha: Listen man! You know that the society we live in doesn't favour male children, you know it! What is your problem? Why must you fill me with incompetent male eggs eh? You are a disgrace. Real men bring forth female children. Tom: But  I'm.... Sasha: Enough! That's all I want to hear on this.       He turned to face the window again and shame, like the cloud of a thousand chariots filled his heart. "Why is the society this way? Can't all children be treated alike? What's the difference between a boy and a girl? ... Society just must have it this way..." In the outer room, the nurses giggled when they heard Sasha shut her husban...

Today on the OTHER WAY ROUND , and for most of the series, we will be focused on a theme and some characters will be built around the theme. What the theme is will be your task to find out. Sasha: Ah! Oooohh! It hurts! Hurry up Tom, this baby is coming out! Ahhhh! Tom: I’m coming! I just need to get the baby bag. Please can you get in the car? Sasha: Hey! Don’t raise your voice at me; I’m moving as fast as I can.   They both got into the car and Tom drove crazily to the hospital breaking some traffic laws in the process. It was just the second year of their marriage and Sasha was having their third child and all that went through her mind was all the beautiful dresses she would pick out for their daughter. She had revelled in the thought of having a baby girl and nothing more for the past trimester of her pregnancy. She recalled how growing up had been for her as the only daughter in a family of six. She was given the best treatment that anyone could...

COME BACK!

Hi there! I understand that it’s been a while but I took the liberty of giving the blog a retreat and to try and fill our some idea bucket. Glad to inform you that the blog is back on board and better. This season, we will be looking at society and by society I mean specifically the Nigerian and maybe the African society upside down. This new series shall be THE OTHER WAY ROUND . It is going to be focused on the stereotypical nature of Nigeria and even Africa’s view of the most important and very popular creatures in existence: man and woman. Now this is not a feminist adventure or a critical appraisal of life in Nigeria or Africa; it’s just story writing, you do the appraising and criticising. We are not in any way suggesting that any order established by God be changed or is wrong, we are looking at what man has made of it.                          ...
