THE OTHER WAY ROUND (1)
Today
on the OTHER WAY ROUND, and for most
of the series, we will be focused on a theme and some characters will be built
around the theme. What the theme is will be your task to find out.
Sasha: Ah! Oooohh! It
hurts! Hurry up Tom, this baby is coming out! Ahhhh!
Tom: I’m coming! I
just need to get the baby bag. Please can you get in the car?
Sasha: Hey! Don’t
raise your voice at me; I’m moving as fast as I can.
They both got into the car and
Tom drove crazily to the hospital breaking some traffic laws in the process.
It
was just the second year of their marriage and Sasha was having their third child and all that went through her mind was all the beautiful dresses she
would pick out for their daughter. She had revelled in the thought of having a
baby girl and nothing more for the past trimester of her pregnancy. She recalled
how growing up had been for her as the only daughter in a family of six. She was
given the best treatment that anyone could imagine. “Being a girl is a blessing’’
she thought to herself until the next contraction pain hit and brought her to
reality. They had gotten to the hospital and some kind-looking nurses had come
out to meet them with a stretcher to assist her into the hospital.
The
delivery was smooth but there were no smiles anywhere. She wasn’t even
aware of it because she had fallen asleep immediately the baby was out. When she
woke up, the private room where she stayed was well lit and there were fresh
roses by her bedside and she heard a symphony in the background but no one was
in sight. She pressed the button by her bed and a nurse strolled into her room.
Sasha: Hi, ummm...where
is my husband and where is my baby? In fact what is going on here?
Nurse: I’m sorry ma’am
but your husband is at the cafeteria and your baby is being checked. I could
get your husband for you if you would want me to.
Sasha: Being checked?
Why is my baby being checked?
Nurse: Your baby is
fine ma’am it’s just standard procedure here. Your baby will be brought to you in
a bit. Sit tight.
Sasha: Thanks and
please tell my husband I need to see him. Thanks again.
The
nurse nodded as she left the room. Outside the room, she heaved a heavy sigh of
relief being glad to her toes that she wasn’t the one to break the news to her.
“Poor lady” she thought to herself; “even poorer her husband” she said to
herself as she told him his wife wanted to see him.
A
half an hour passed and the nurses heard screams coming from Sasha’s room,
reluctantly two nurses went over to Sasha’s room. Everything seemed to be fine,
the baby was by its mother and the husband stood looking out the window. Since
no one said anything the nurses left knowing what the fuss was about and since
they couldn’t interfere, they minded their own business. The society minds its
own business.
