ABOUT THE DROUGHT
The leaves were dying and the streams were drying up fast. His father's farm was doing better than most but lately, the worry lines on his father's face started appearing. He knew that if their farm was swallowed up by the impending drought, they would have nothing else to fall back on.
Mom had hay fever again and this time looked really deplorable. She looked nothing at all like the mama he'd grown up to know. Her chubby frame had disappeared like the bloom of the flowers in their neighbour's garden had disappeared. She just lay there, coughing and coughing. There was a smell too and this irritated Olly. His papa on the other hand, was undeterred. They had little money left, all they had had been put in to taking care of her.
Olly hated the fact that mama had to fall ill now and take all the money. This wasn't the first time she'd fallen ill but it seemed that this time, she wasn't planning on getting better. What baffled Olly was his Papa. Papa used whatever time he had away from the farm to take care of mama. Olly wondered how papa could stay around her especially with the smell that she emitted. There was also something weird. It was the way papa looked at mama. There was always something soft and warm in his eyes. He tended to her with so much care and love. He never seemed to be bothered about the smell or her receding frame. He just wanted to be with her. Ten year old Olly didn't understand this at all.
