Becky quietly and secretly nurtured the feelings she was having for Mike. She couldn't open up to him or anyone because she was unsure of what they would think about her. She was hopeful that after some time, he may just fall in love with her, ask her out and they would be happy together.

Oblivious to her Mike had met someone new, a girl Rose. She was one of those freshmen and had caught Mike's interest. She came to him in need of help, she needed to be tutored in a difficult course. The duo met severally and something just sparked off, out of nowhere. They started dating and kept it on a very low key.

Their effort to make the budding relationship a secret was no longer successful as some close friends were let in on it. Becky, however was kept out of the loop. Mike had sensed slight jealousy when he told her he was helping Rose with a course. He pleaded with the friends that knew about his relationship with Rose not to tell Becky. If his suspicion was right, then letting her know would mean trouble.

Becky soon found out about the relationship. She went all hot like a volcano; she quit speaking to Mike and kept other friends at arm's length. Her anger was that she was taken for a fool, betrayed by friends and replaced by a misfit. Technically, she had a point.
