THE UNTHINKABLE 4

It was now only a day to the wedding and her mother, her only surviving family sang to her. It was a lullaby and her mother often sang it to her when she was little. She enjoyed the lullaby especially the fact that it was her mother that sang. Her voice was sweet and calm and it made her feel like a child. There was a knock on the door and she went to it. When she opened the door, her heart stopped beating, her face flushed and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. It was him!
Suddenly her heart resumed its duty, but this time, it beat faster, her hands trembled and her throat became dry. He asked politely to be let in and she responded by ushering him in. Her mother excused herself leaving the room to the couple. She sat speechless and he wondered at her frame. He informed her that they would be moving to another country after the wedding but all she could do was nod.  When he was done, he asked if he could leave to which she responded with another nod. When he was at the door, he turned to her, held her hand and told to her to determine in her heart not to let him in the next time he’d come and show her heart’s determination by saying a simple but firm, NO. She pulled her hand away surprised. How did he know? Would he reject her? Who told him? She pondered. He reached out and pulled her chin up so he could look into her eyes and then he told her he had forgiven her. She stood there, tears in her eyes, no words to say but only the feeling of joy and guilt as she sunk to her knees. He was long gone but she couldn’t get past what had happened. She knew she never would.
