THE UNTHINKABLE 5
The day came swiftly and beautifully. The birds chirped sweetly in the trees. They seemed to know that the day was special. The whole town had gathered in the church. As the organist played signalling that the bride was to come in, the realisation dawned: She was about to get married! MARRIED! Forever! To one person, as against the whole world! She would no longer be committed to any other or every other but to just this one. She had her habits, her hobbies, her addictions; but she would be letting all of them go, just for this one man. She’d be separated from her mother forever, her childhood home, her friends, her fantasies…. She felt the tears trickle down. She was glad she wore a veil. But she was in love. She loved him and with love she could do even this, though unthinkable, she could let them go.
As she took each step, she mentioned in her heart the name of all the things she was attached to, and she let them go. By the time she reached his side she had mentioned all.
The priest read to her her vows, but she said her vows as they came to her.
“For all you’ve done, for all you are, for your love, I give myself to you. My life is not mine anymore, I give it to you…” her heart flowed with unspeakable joy as she spoke in between tears.
“For you, I give away all I had loved, for you, I give my love, my life, my all till death do us part.”
Everyone sat amazed at the affection she showed. Her mother wept. He took her hand and placed the ring on her finger and there, she was bound to him.
